Testimonials

Paul W. – Austin, Texas & Toronto, Canada

Tammy is an amazing coach that has a very wide and deep knowledge of training for endurance events. She always has an in-depth, knowledgeable explanation for my detailed questions that are easy for someone who hasn’t studied as much of the field as Tammy has. Tammy has made it possible for me to do various endurance events, providing invaluable coaching on nutrition, pacing, and training.

Tammy’s workouts were custom tailored to me based on my abilities, not copy and pasted. Because of this I always had a balance between pushing myself hard, but being able to achieve the goals she set to stay on track with the training. Based on Tammy’s background in first hand endurance events, and schooling, she is able to provide authentic, scientific advice that isn’t swayed by the latest fad or marketing trend.

Working with Tammy has always been a great experience, kept me looking forward to my next session, and inspired me to keep pushing more and learning more about my body and abilities.

*Paul was consulted every 4-6 weeks in his training for the 2010 Texas Time Trials 24-hour cycling event, and his first marathon, the 2011 Livestrong Austin Marathon.

I took a sabbatical from work in early 2007 and decided that I would use this time to tackle a goal I had only dreamed about….doing a full Ironman triathlon. I was incredibly fortunate to have Coach Tammy guide me through the entire effort: 1) dealing with the “morning after” emotions after registering – “what have I done?!?” 2) developing a very detailed and customized 11-month training program to take me from novice to Ironman 3) experienced counsel to address/adjust for real-life interruptions to training, such as injury, burn-out, and having a family/social life.

I went to Panama City, FL in November 2007 feeling scared but ready (probably the right combination!). Coach Tammy had taken me through two half-irons by then, and I knew how to do what was facing me on race-day. It was an exhilarating and life-changing experience, and I look forward to tackling many more athletic challenges in the years ahead with Coach Tammy’s guidance.

*Kurt received on-going, monthly coaching through 2007 for his first Ironman, and is currently back onboard, focusing on improving cycling and running speed, with a 3-year plan of a Kona-qualifying finish time. Welcome back, Kurt!

Tammy Metzger coached me to a successful Iron distance race, the 2009 Beach 2 Battleship. I called on Tammy for help a mere 4 months before the race and she put together a training plan that had me working harder and getting more fit than I could ever have imagined. Although that’s pretty much what you expect of a coach, in my case the endeavor was more remarkable both because I only started racing triathlon 3 years ago and because I was 54 years old. I never before considered myself to be an athlete but after following Tammy’s plan and successfully completing my race there’s not a doubt in my mind that I’ve earned the designation ‘athlete’ and the title ‘Ironman’ (trademarks notwithstanding). This all happened in spite of me having a total breakdown in the middle of the training, convinced that I was just fooling myself and I was simply not up to the task. Tammy was a fantastic coach and mentor, assuring me that some minor adjustments in the plan were all that was needed and that indeed, I was capable of reaching my goals.

I’m not sure I could have done that without her. I might well have given up, never raced and be walking around with my tail between my legs instead of holding my head high and gleefully showing off my AG 3 trophy. – Pamela (aka 21st Century Mom)

Last year I signed up for Ironman Arizona. This would be my second Ironman and my goal was to finish in less than 13 hours. In an effort to achieve this goal, I looked for a coach that could provide Guidance, offer Objectivity, who was an Athlete and who was a good Listener. After speaking to several different people, I decided that Tammy would fulfill these requirements.

Throughout our nine month journey, Tammy offered me guidance around nutrition and equipment and provided objectivity in setting and analyzing daily workouts. In addition, being an Ironman athlete allowed her to better understand the unique needs and stresses that were being placed on my body. She was also a patient listener when I would voice my concerns and fears about the impending event. Our journey culminated with the Ironman Arizona event. In all, the day went as smooth as an Ironman can be expected to go and at the end of the day I reached my goal, finishing with a time of 12 hours and 48 minutes.

As an athlete with a chronic illness I needed a coach that could not only help me reach my goal of running a half marathon, but that would be able to help me work around the issues I faced. Coach Tammy was able to create a plan that was flexible yet still allowed me to succeed.

*Jim came back to full-time coaching in fall of 2010, and recently completed his first marathon at the Walt Disney World Marathon, despite dealing with a chronic illness. Jim will continue to train, targeting a PR at the Disney Half Marathon in Fall 2011.
